WHY A SMALL GROUP BIBLE STUDY?

Most of us have several Bibles in our homes, but how often do we study the Scriptures that we hold so dear? Small group studies are a very good way to learn more about the Bible and the God who we believe in and follow. In a small group there is time to ask questions and discuss the Bible with fellow believers. We all can and should study the scripture on our own, but there is also a time to study together. God uses the insights and questions of others to help us grow and mature in the ways of God.

If you are not already part of a small group Bible Study, consider a visit to one of the studies listed on this page. It is always good to call the leader of the study ahead of time to confirm the location and time of the meeting as they sometimes change.

If you have interest in hosting a new study, please contact Pastor Steve 510-739-0430.

Developing Fully Devoted Followers of Jesus Christ

Come, follow is the great invitation of Jesus Christ.   Jesus approached men and women and said, “Come, follow me”.  Many people come to believe in Jesus, but not everyone steps forth in faith and follows.  This is a strange phenomenon because in the scriptures belief and following go hand in hand.   The New Testament calls those who believe in Jesus to follow him and those who follow are called disciples.  Disciples are apprentices.  When we come to Jesus, we sign on to be his apprentices and in turn we are called by Christ to apprentice others.  Jesus said, “ Go into all the world and make disciples…teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.”

The elders at New Hope believe that making disciples is one of the main tasks of the local church.  Hopefully everything we do at New Hope will contribute to developing fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.  We have worship services, prayer groups, Bible Study, missions, outreach, small groups and fellowship activities that all work together to help us grow and mature us as followers of Jesus.  A problem arises in that it is a “bits and pieces” approach to learning what following Jesus is all about.  One group might be teaching prayer and another stewardship and another worship, but how does one learn to put all these things together?  And where is the personal connection and accountability?  There is a need for ministries that have discipling as their main focus.   We presently have three ministries that have disciple making as their main focus:  Bethel Bible Study, Experiencing God, and Discipleship Triads.   Each is unique in approach, but each is designed to help believers develop into fully devoted followers of Christ.

Bethel Bible Series

Bethel is a comprehensive overview of the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation. It uses lecture, visuals, handouts and discussion and is very user friendly. Bethel is designed to help followers grow and understand that they have been blessed by God to be a blessing to others.  The series is taught in six units, of seven sessions each.  No prior Bible knowledge is needed.   See Tony Chapman to find out more.

Experiencing God

This group focuses on learning how God speaks to us through the Bible, circumstances, prayer and the church community.  The Experiencing God Workbook, by Blackaby is used as a guide.  This group meets for 13 weeks.  See Bev Day to find out when the next group will start.

Discipleship Triads

A leader and two others form an intentional small group for 29 weeks. The small group meets weekly to combine Bible study, prayer, accountability, and spiritual disciplines to promote maturity and growth as followers of Jesus.  Near the end of the 29 weeks a commitment is made by the group members to each find 2 others to start a new group and the process continues.   See Pastor Steve to learn how to become part of a triad.
